This was my late grandma Connie's recipe for Old Fashioned Snickerdoodles. She was an amazing cook and baker. Her absence is truly felt, especially during the holidays. These cookies are a crowd-pleaser for any occasion!
This recipe is perfect for any holiday party or those cold days spent at home.
This was inspired by my mom's recipe for soft-baked gingersnaps, and pairs well with milk or a hot cup of coffee. The Old Fashioned Snickerdoodles and Soft-Baked Gingersnaps are perfect treats for fall!

Ingredients
The cream of tarter is absolutely essential as it adds a tangy flavor to the cookies and leaves the texture soft and pillowy. Cinnamon is a classic flavor for Old Fashioned Snickerdoodles, however, there are variations and substitutions listed below.
- Butter
- Sugar
- Eggs
- Flour
- Salt
- Baking Soda
- Cream of Tarter
- Cinnamon
- Cinnamon sugar (optional)
See recipe card for quantities.
Instructions
- Step 1: Cream butter and sugar together. Add eggs and beat until smooth.
- Step 2: Add dry ingredients and beat well.
- Step 3: use a cookie scoop and roll into balls of dough. Roll dough balls in cinnamon sugar and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Step 4: Bake at 375 degrees for 8-9 minutes and cool completely
Hint: My favorite thing to use when baking these Old Fashioned Snickerdoodle cookies are these parchment sheets. It makes lining my pans so much easier. These are my favorite ones.
Substitutions
If you're not a big fan of cinnamon, other spices can be used.
- Nutmeg - use ¼ the amount of cinnamon as it provides a more woodsy flavor
- Allspice - use ¼ the amount of cinnamon as allspice provides a peppery bite
- Cloves - use the same amounts as cinnamon as it provides a similar sweet flavor
Here is a version of Snickerdoodles that's perfect for fall! This recipe uses a homemade chai mix that is simply heavenly.
Variations of Old Fashioned Snickerdoodles
- Kicked up fall version - add pumpkin pie spice in a one-to-one ratio to really ramp up the fall vibes
- Extra - instead of rolling in cinnamon sugar, make a mix of sugar and cloves to really deepen the flavor of the cookies

Top Tip for Old Fashioned Snickerdoodles
Make sure the cinnamon sugar mixture is well mixed before rolling the dough into the balls. If the cinnamon is isolated it can cause the cookies to look burnt. An easy shortcut is to use a pre-made cinnamon sugar mix.
