Toxic Overload
In this day and age, there are so many toxins that we are constantly bombarded with. They're in our food, water, and the products we use. This upcoming year Michael and I have decided to lighten our toxic load and begin to make cleaner swaps every month through 2025. We NEED to make healthier choices for us and our kids. Our main goal is to only have lower-toxic options in the new house. I know that a lot of people out there really strive to be completely no-tox, which is amazing. For us, just starting out, that seems a bit daunting. We're focusing on lower-toxic options as we begin our journey. These are the first 5 swaps we're making to get the ball rolling.
1. Laundry Detergent
We love the convenience of detergent pods but they tend to have toxic chemicals in their formulations. We're planning to switch to Truly Free detergent products. Their products are 100% toxin-free, gentle on the environment, and tough on dirt.
2. Deodorant
We made the switch to aluminum-free deodorant a few years ago but there are still some ingredients in our current deodorants that we're trying to get away from. Lume deodorants are made without aluminum, phthalates, sulfates, and parabens. Phthalates are known to be hormone disrupters. Since the kids are so young, we're wanting to utilize a cleaner product before they start using deodorant to have the best options when the time comes.
3. Oral Hygiene Products
Michael and I both use sensitive toothpaste that has some pretty harsh chemicals. After our holistic dentist recommended Rise Well products, we plan to switch to their hydroxyapatite toothpaste and a Sonicare toothbrush. MJ has been using Rise Well products for several months now. He LOVES it. He's excited to brush his teeth every morning. I'm a bit more excited than I probably should be for this one! I can't wait for our shipment to get here.
4. Shampoo & Conditioner
I have never had any luck with a good shampoo and conditioner that leaves my hair clean and smooth without buildup. Michael is used to using a 3-in-1 body wash and shampoo that is full of synthetic dyes. We're excited to switch to Kitsch products. Their shampoo and conditioner bars are made with cleaner ingredients and cut down on plastic consumption. Plus, they take up way less space in the shower. Grab one of their soap holders to really make your bars last!
5. Candles
After doing a lot of research on candles, we've decided to try our hand at making our own candles. Utilizing essential oils, soy wax, and wooden wicks, we can decrease the amount of volatile organic compounds that are released when candles are burned. As an added bonus, homemade candles are free of synthetic dyes and fragrances!
Just the Beginning
We're so excited to incorporate lower-toxic options in our current home and to be completely switched to lower-toxic products by the time we start to build our dream home. Stay tuned to see what other swaps we make throughout the year!
