Struggling with Thanksgiving?

This past year, Michael and I struggled with thanksgiving and recognizing all the blessings we've had in our lifetime. We've had a lot of curveballs thrown our way. We've had financial hurdles, personal struggles, and dealing with two kiddos on top of everything is impossible some days. Although after some of the things we've overcome in Jesus, I count my blessings that Michael and I are still here to raise our two precious babies.

Regardless of the trials we've faced, Michael and I continue to pour into the Bible and take solace in the truth of the Word. These are our favorite verses that encompass Thanksgiving. The verses help us keep going while being thankful. We hope you can find some truth to them as well.

NOTE: All of these translations come from the NASB (New American Standard Bible).

1. Psalm 95:1-5

Praise to the LORD, and Warning against Unbelief.

1O come, let us sing for joy to the LORD,
            Let us shout joyfully to the rock of our salvation.

      2Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving,
            Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms.

      3For the LORD is a great God
            And a great King above all gods,

      4In whose hand are the depths of the earth,
            The peaks of the mountains are His also.

      5The sea is His, for it was He who made it,
            And His hands formed the dry land.

2. Hebrews 12:28

Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe;

3. Colossians 3:15-17

15Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful. 16Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.

4. Ephesians 5:18-20

18And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, 19speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; 20always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father;

5. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

 16Rejoice always; 17pray without ceasing; 18in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

6. Colossians 2:6-7

 6Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, 7having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude.

7. 1 Chronicles 16:34

34O give thanks to the LORD, for He is good;
            For His lovingkindness is everlasting.

8. Philippians 4:4-7

 4Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! 5Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near. 6Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

9. 2 Corinthians 9:15

15Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!

10. 1 Chronicles 29:13

“Now therefore, our God, we thank You, and praise Your glorious name.

Bonus Verse Psalm 107:1-3

BOOK 5

The LORD Delivers Men from Manifold Troubles.

1Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good,
            For His lovingkindness is everlasting.

      2Let the redeemed of the LORD say so,
            Whom He has redeemed from the hand of the adversary

      3And gathered from the lands,
            From the east and from the west,
            From the north and from the south.

Final Thoughts about Thanksgiving

We hope you find some comfort in these verses. While the road may seem difficult, let today be a lesson for all of us. Jesus deserves our thanks for every blessing we've received. For Michael and me, this is easier said than done. But we continue to grow our faith and lean on Him in all things. We encourage you to do the same.
